Is it a bad idea to publish my email address online?

This depends, but generally, the answer is yes. Publishing your email address online, such as in message boards or Web sites, is a prime way to make it retrievable by email harvesters.

If you are planning to publish your email address with information online, consider encoding it using a harvester-proof Javascript, or consider setting up a “dummy” or temporary email alias. Aliases can be set up to route email into your primary account, but should they suddenly end up on a spam list, you can always shut them off, without sacrificing your primary email account.
